This temple is a sample of nineteenth-century neoclassical architecture This style took its inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman buildings. The portico of Doric columns of this temple is a clear example.
But from wills found in the Municipal Historical Archive of Irapuato, it is known that at the end of the eighteenth century there was already a chapel dedicated to San Francisco de Paula that was in poor condition. It was during the nineteenth century that it was rebuilt as we see it today.
San Francisco de Paula is known as the founder of the Order of the Minims. Its motto in Latin is “caritas bonitas”, charity and kindness. This theme can be read in the coat of arms that tops the facade of this temple. Another characteristic of San Francisco de Paula is that for a time in his life he was an anchorite or hermit.
That is why sculptures of other hermit saints were placed on the facade: San Pablo de Tebas and San Antonio Abad. It is worth stopping a little to admire this small but emblematic temple of our city.
