Originally this temple was the parish of Irapuato. The building was built in the eighteenth century in the Baroque style; but its tower was not completed until the beginning of the twentieth century. As it was the seat of the parish priest, the records of baptisms, marriages and deaths of the people of Irapuato were kept there since 1633. For example, it is known that María Josefa Demetria del Pilar, daughter of the commander of the troops of the province of Guanajuato Agustín de Iturbide and Ana María Huarte, was baptized here on December 25, 1814. On January 3, 2004, with the creation of the diocese of Irapuato, this temple became a cathedral.
