The construction of this temple is due to the will of Doña Juana de Arroyo, who in 1783 provided in her will that once her adopted son, Dr. Juan Francisco de Avellafuerte, died, her hacienda of Tomelópez and her ranches, should be leased so that the money could finance the construction of a church in honor of the Virgen de Guadalupe. His will took a long time to be fulfilled, as it was not until the end of the nineteenth century that this neoclassical style temple was built. According to historian J. Jesús Félix Magaña, this religious space was inaugurated until July 11, 1880.
