This is one of the oldest Barrios in Irapuato. A document from 1747 has been found in the Municipal Historical Archive of Irapuato where he is already mentioned. Surely since that time there was a small chapel in honor of the Apostle Santiago, the patron saint of the neighborhood. Its square also dates to colonial times.
In 1880, Father Juan Nepomuceno García organized an octave in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Each neighborhood of the village of Irapuato celebrated one day of this octave in turn. This was the origin of the festivity of the Barrios. And the first barrio to celebrate this octave was the barrio de Santiaguito, on December 13, 1880. This is how Father Rafael Reyes relates it:
“The first day of the octave was celebrated by the Barrio de Santiago. On the eve of the festivity at night, at 8 a.m., a white flare was lit, as a sign of the Barrio. Then they started burning rockets. There were occasional lanterns at the doors of the houses. This was the origin of the illuminations.”
